Frozen Hibiscus Lemonade

Frozen hibiscus lemonade is made with fresh squeezed lemons, hibiscus tea, and lots of ice! This icy and delicious drink takes lemonade up a notch and tastes just like summer!

Hisbiscus lemonade

Over the winter, I grew this huggggeee Florida roselle. It almost towered over me ( I mean… I stand at 4’11), and I was quite proud! Roselle is actually what is used to make hibiscus tea. It is a brightly colored red-ish pink flower that is dried out and used for tea.

Hibiscus tea is super colorful and tastes a little sweet and a little tart. Combining the tea with lemonade gives this frosty drink a sweet and sour taste that is perfectly balanced.

This frozen hibiscus drink is packed with vitamin C, which is great for immune support. Lemons and hibiscus tea both have high levels of vitamin C, so not only are you hydrating, but also getting a huge dose of this beneficial and necessary vitamin!

There’s really nothing like homemade lemonade. Fresh squeezed lemons create such an incredible aroma. Creating fun flavors to combine with lemonade is such a great twist on this summery drink. Hate to tell you this, but after you have this frozen hibiscus lemonade, you may never look at plain lemonade the same again!

Frozen hibiscus lemonade ingredients

  • Hibiscus tea- Most grocery stores carry hibiscus tea in the tea aisle. Loose leaf or bagged tea is perfect for this recipe.
  • Lemons- Fresh lemons are squeezed to make the base of this frosty drink.
  • Sugar- Florida sugar is my favorite sugar to uses because it is not bleached and the price is very comparable to the cheap bleached sugar.
  • Water- Water is added to make the simple syrup.
  • Ice- Lots and lots of ice is used to blend this drink into a frosty, frozen delight!

Chef’s tips

  • Use a high powered blender. To get this hibiscus lemonade extra frosty, use a high powered blender like a Vitamix. This really breaks up the ice to make it like an Icee texture.
  • Do not seep the hibiscus tea for more than 5 minutes. The hibiscus tea is a very potent and strong tasting tea, and when it has steeped for longer than 5 minutes, it can become very overpowering. We want the hibiscus tea to compliment the lemonade, not take it over.
  • Use an alternative to sugar. You can sub out the sugar with healthier options like honey, maple syrup, stevia, monk fruit extract, etc.
  • Make the simple syrup ahead of time. If you are making this for a party and have a deadline to meet, go ahead and make the simple syrup ahead of time. This will save you a solid hour in preparation time. The simple syrup can be made and stored in the fridge since you want the simple syrup to be used cold anyway!

How to make frozen hibiscus lemonade

  1. Make the simple syrup. Boil the water and add the tea bags. Allow the tea to steep for up to five minutes. Take the tea bags out, pressing them to get any liquid out. Add the sugar to the tea to make the simple syrup. Once the sugar has dissolved completely, remove it from the heat and place it in the fridge until it has cooled.
  2. Squeeze the lemons. Use a citrus juicer to squeeze the lemon juice. Discard the organic material.
  3. Combine the ingredients in a blender. Once the simple syrup is cool, combine the lemon juice, hibiscus simple syrup, water, and ice in a blender and blend until it has an Icee like consistency.
  4. Serve. To make this drink extra gorgeous, pour into individual cups, then top with sprigs of mint, slices of lemon, and a cute straw! What a gorgeous summer drink! Mangia!

Ingredients
  

  • 3 cups water divided
  • 2 tsp hibiscus tea (2 regular sized hibiscus tea bags)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup lemon juice about 6 lemons
  • 5-6 cups ice

Instructions
 

  • Make the simple syrup. Heat 2 cups of water over high heat to a boil. Place the hibiscus tea in the water and reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Allow the tea to steep for up to 5 minutes. Remove the tea and press the bag to extract any liquid from the tea bag, then discard it. Bring the tea to a boil, then add the sugar. Stir the sugar into the water until it is completely dissolved. Place the simple syrup in the fridge until it is chilled.
  • Squeeze the lemons. Use a citrus juicer to squeeze the lemon juice.
  • Combine in a blender. In a high powered blender, combine teh hibiscus simple syrup, lemon juice, 1 cup of water, and 5 or 6 heaping cups of ice. Blend the mixture until it resembles the texture of an Icee. Serve with springs of mint, lemon slices, and cute straws. Mangia!
