Chef’s Tips
- Use 90/10 ground beef for a leaner option without too much grease.
- Fresh ginger and garlic add depth to the flavor—don’t skip them!
- For an extra kick, add red pepper flakes or increase the garlic chili sauce.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef (90/10): Lean ground beef works best to avoid excess grease.
- 3/4 cup coco aminos or soy sauce: Choose low-sodium soy sauce for a healthier option.
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar (packed): Adds a touch of sweetness and caramelized depth.
- 1/2 white onion (diced): For a mild, slightly sweet flavor.
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger (minced): Provides a warm, aromatic kick.
- 2 tbsp garlic (minced): A key ingredient for robust flavor.
- 1 tsp garlic chili sauce: Adds a spicy heat; adjust to your preference.
- 1 tsp sesame oil: Enhances the dish with nutty undertones.
- 1 spring onion bundle: Tops off the dish with freshness and crunch.
- 1 tbsp olive oil: Used to sauté the beef.
- Sesame seeds (for topping): Optional garnish for added texture and presentation.
Substitutions
- Ground beef: Substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
- Coco aminos: Use tamari for a gluten-free alternative to soy sauce.
- Dark brown sugar: Replace with coconut sugar or honey for a natural sweetener.
- White rice: Swap for brown rice, quinoa, or cauliflower rice for a healthier base.
Instructions
- Set the Instant Pot to sauté mode. Add olive oil and ground beef to the pot. Cook until the beef is browned, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks. Add the diced white onion and sauté until softened.
- In a small bowl or liquid measuring cup, whisk together coco aminos (or soy sauce), dark brown sugar, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and garlic chili sauce. Pour the sauce over the beef mixture in the Instant Pot.
- Let the sauce simmer and thicken slightly, stirring occasionally to coat the beef evenly.
- Chop the tops of the spring onions for garnish and set aside. Cut the white bottoms into halves and add them to the pot. Sauté for an additional 2 minutes.
- Serve the beef over steamed jasmine rice or your preferred base. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped spring onion tops.
Storage & Reheating
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheating: Warm the beef in the microwave or on the stovetop, adding a splash of water if needed to loosen the sauce.
