Flour Tortillas

Once you savor the flavor of homemade flour tortillas, fresh off the cast iron, you’ll never look back to store-bought again! These tortillas are pliable and perfectly sized, ideal for your favorite Mexican dishes. Here in Florida, the humidity adds a unique twist to the cooking process. Below you’ll find the recipe as well as some essential tips for creating the perfect tortillas.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of flour (plus 2 TBS, see note below)
  • 3 TBS butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients: Combine flour and salt in a bowl. Stir to combine.
  2. Add Butter: Melt the butter and add to the flour mixture. Stir lightly to incorporate.
  3. Knead the Dough: Slowly add water while stirring until the dough comes together. Knead the dough with your hands for a couple of minutes.
  4. Rest the Dough: Break the dough into 8 smaller balls and let rest for 45 minutes. This step is crucial, don’t skip it!
  5. Shape and Cook: On a floured surface, roll the dough into disk shapes. Heat a pan to medium heat, and cook each tortilla for 30-45 seconds per side. Enjoy fresh!

Chef’s Tips

  • Humidity and Flour: In more humid places, you might need to add extra flour. A bit of stickiness is fine, but the dough shouldn’t stick to your hands.
  • Rolling Technique: Roll in one direction (clockwise) to create a perfect circle.
  • Avoid Re-rolling: Once rolled into disks, you can’t roll them back up; the dough won’t stretch the same way.
  • Have Fun!: Enjoy the process, and don’t hesitate to get your hands dirty.

Storage Tips

  • Refrigerate: Place cooked tortillas in an airtight container, they will last up to a week.
  • Freeze: For longer storage, you can freeze the tortillas between sheets of parchment paper and use them as needed.
